Image of Presidential frontrunner Raila Odinga emerged on various social media platforms claiming he had donned T-shirt and sunhat bearing brands of his main rival party, UDA. We subjected this image to online reverse image search and established an original picture had earlier been published online but bearing prints of Kipkeino Classic 2022 event held at Kasarani, Nairobi. Odinga had actually attended the event where he was taken the picture.
Through Error Level Analysis, we also established distorted pixils on the patched image, stretched picture on sides.
Raila’s image emerged hours after William Ruto’s image addressing traders at an open air market in Ruai Nairobi. One of the traders had donned an apron with Raila Odinga’s campaign messaging.
Online media users claimed the image was fabricated. We established the image was authentic. Daily news on their YouTube Channel published a video claiming Ruto forced the trader to remove Azimio-branded apron, headlined ‘SEE HOW DP RUTO FORCED MAMA MBOGA TO FOLD OFF AZIMIO BRANDED APRON IN NAIROBI MARKET.’
INTENT: A lot of fabricated images are now circulating on social media with skewed messaging purporting certain politicians ditched their parties and are supporting opponents.
Various bloggers, or organizations driving political propaganda agenda are now out developing misleading and images and graphical material.
This has resulted to compounded misinformation and disinformation.
