Access to latest technologies has in the hindsight resulted to production of misleading informational material. Largely affected area is in visual material like images to mimic original contents. Sometimes, consumers may not be able to distinguish fake image from authentic picture material, especially those developed using advanced technologies.
A post from Facebook and twitter with an image purported to be of Polycarp Igathe sewing shoes, we established is a fabrication from an original version. Igathe is a Kenyan business man, corporate executive currently running for the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat. He is battling out with Johnson Sakaja, who is currently the Nairobi County Senator.
From a reverse image check on the purported image, we established that, an original picture is that of a cobbler called Stino Muhindo’s, lifted from Global Press journal and cloned to imply that it is an image of Igathe. The picture was taken in Democratic Republic of Congo and published by Merveille Kavira Luneghe. Error Level Analysis picked out tampered pixels and colour temperature. Evidence of asymmetry were also noted.
INTENT:
The image was mainly produced for political satire. Several images of Igathe have been widely circulated online showing his interaction largely with low and middle income residents, in what is seen to be his campaign strategy and efforts to understand day-to-day living, struggles and challenges that he seeks to address.
